L7e or T3b – two homologations. What's the difference?
Many customers in our ATV store don't understand the categories of ATVs and their differences, which is completely normal when you're looking for an ATV for the first time. This article will clarify the dilemma of which category to choose, what the advantages and disadvantages of each are, and why you should choose L7e over T3b or vice versa.
What is L7e (Category B) – the "automotive" approach
L7e is a homologation that treats ATVs as light quadricycles.
This is the category that requires a Category B driving license.
What does this mean in practice?
Speed limit: Driving is not speed-limited (usually 90km/h or more), so L7e models are also intended for asphalt, roads, and long distances.
Rear differential and brakes: The braking system is more powerful. Often it has one more brake disc than a tractor. The rear differential is also very important; in Category B, it can also be OPEN (wheels turn individually, like in a car) for easy cornering and maneuvering. It contributes to less wear and tear on all tires. Driving is easier for beginners and also for experienced drivers who want a comfortable ride. This differential also plays a major role in the difficulty of turning the steering wheel, which really helps with ease of steering – less tire friction, no pulling forward due to adjusting into the turn. Some tractors already have open differentials too. Read on...

The exhaust system in Category B is quieter, as it has an additional muffler that significantly reduces the noise coming from the exhaust pipe. This is why a tractor might feel faster.
Max. trailer weight: half the vehicle weight (approx. 200kg). The limited trailer weight is a big drawback when it comes to towing with a trailer. It is limited to half the vehicle weight.
The price of such an ATV can be slightly higher. Registration and insurance, however, are significantly more expensive than for "tractors," potentially up to 3 times more expensive. (car €180, tractor €60)
Someone chooses L7e who has a car license and doesn't want to take a tractor license, which is ridiculously easy to obtain. You can check here. In short, differences like the rear differential, brakes, sound, and unlimited speed can be key factors in your decision.
What is T3b (Category F) – Tractor
T3b is a homologation that classifies an ATV as a tractor.
This means you can drive it with a Category F (tractor) license.
What does this decision bring?
The speed limit is 60 km/h and is set in the system. Some models with an ABS system (Segway AT10L ABS) have an officially permitted speed of up to 90km/h, which is a great advantage. Those ATVs that are speed-limited can be electronically adjusted to have a higher speed, but this means the ATV loses its road legality, as such a modification is illegal.
The drive construction is usually simpler. A 90-degree angular transmission, unlike a differential, provides robustness for off-road use, towing, and heavy loads. Steering is less light, or almost the same as in Category B, if it has EPS power steering. If the ATV always has a locked rear differential, it doesn't mean it's not drivable, but it requires a little more effort when turning and steering. Off-road, it's even better because it never runs out of traction and always brakes evenly with both wheels. Some tractors also have a differential with an electrical on/off option as standard, but they are rare, meaning it drives the same as a Category B vehicle.
Max. trailer weight: 750 kg with brakes / 500 kg without brakes, which is much higher than in Category B (L7e - around 200kg)
Costs are lower, especially for technical inspections, road tax, and insurance. They can be up to 3 times more favorable.
T3b is chosen by someone who also has an F category license and needs an ATV for all tougher conditions, powerful and reliable towing, and off-road driving... and not for driving on the road.
Conclusion:
The required license is different for both categories, and you simply can't do without it. For L7e, we need a Category B license, which almost all of us have. For T3b, an F category license is essential, which can also be easily obtained with a course on safety in working with a tractor (license cost around €280, 3 days of training, and a short and simple knowledge test). In the Gorizia region, this is carried out by the Šempeter pri Gorici biotechnical school.
Vehicles have some differences. However, some models are not available in both categories. The main difference is top speed. Both versions already offer lockable differentials, power steering, and everything necessary for any use. However, be aware that you may also encounter a tractor (T3b) without a rear differential, which can make your daily driving very difficult. Trailer towing can also be a major obstacle if you are buying it for work purposes.
