CFMOTO ATVs have become increasingly common on the Slovenian ATV market in recent years. Models such as the CFMOTO 450, CFMOTO 520, CFMOTO 625, and CFMOTO 1000 offer a strong balance of performance, features, and price, so we're seeing more of them come through our shop as well.
Xway is not an official CFMOTO dealer or authorized service center, but we've recently serviced a fair number of CFMOTO ATVs and noticed a few issues that keep repeating across different models.
Since we don't service CFMOTO vehicles at the same volume as, say, TGB or Segway, we recommend checking each issue yourself as well, or consulting an official CFMOTO service center where needed. The overview below should help you understand faster where to look, how the system works, and what has actually helped in practice.
At Xway you can order every spare part for your CFMOTO ATV, down to the smallest piece. 👉 Visit the spare parts page, find the parts diagram for your model, pick the number of the part you need, and send it to us as an inquiry – we'll prepare a quote based on that.
⚡ 1. ECU unit on CFMOTO 450 and 520 – unstable ignition and Check Engine light
One issue we've seen fairly often on CFMOTO 450 and CFMOTO 520 models is related to the ECU unit. The ECU (engine control unit) determines ignition timing and injector firing. When it malfunctions, the engine loses one or both of these signals, resulting in unstable starting or a complete no-start.
Most common symptoms:
- Check Engine light is on
- the ATV starts only intermittently, with no obvious cause
- in more serious cases the engine won't start at all – it turns over normally, but there's no spark or fuel injection
🔧 How to diagnose it correctly
Whatever the symptom, always check the battery first – a voltage drop during cranking is a common cause on ATVs that people often skip over. If the battery checks out fine, many owners (and mechanics) start swapping sensors one by one without actually knowing which one is at fault. In our experience, it's worth having a spare, known-working ECU on hand purely for testing – that way you can quickly confirm or rule out the ECU as the cause, instead of needlessly replacing sensors.
✅ Fix
If the battery measures fine and the sensors and wiring show no fault, replacing the ECU unit is most often what resolves the issue for good.
⛽ 2. Fuel pump on CFMOTO 450 and 520 – a frequent replacement
We've replaced the fuel pump on CFMOTO 450 and 520 models quite a few times in our shop. The pump creates the pressure needed to get fuel to the injector properly – if that pressure drops, the engine doesn't get enough fuel at the right time.
Most common symptoms:
- harder engine starting
- loss of power under load or acceleration
- the engine unexpectedly stalls while riding
- engine doesnt start
🔧 Why it fails
The fuel pump is a wear part – over time, contamination in the fuel, or a vehicle sitting for long periods with old fuel in the tank, all reduce its output until it drops below what the engine needs to run normally.
✅ Fix
Replace the fuel pump. We also recommend checking the fuel filter at the same time, as it's often a contributing cause of premature wear.
⛽ 3. Fuel gauge – jumping or inaccurate level readings
Alongside the pump itself, CFMOTO models also show a fuel gauge issue where the display reading doesn't match what's actually in the tank.
Most common symptoms:
- the fuel needle suddenly jumps up or down
- the display shows empty even though there's still fuel in the tank
- the fuel level fluctuates more than expected while riding
🔧 Why it happens
The fuel level sender works on a float principle – the float moves with the fuel level and sends a signal to the display through a resistor. When dirt or fuel sediment builds up on the float or its mechanism, its movement is restricted and the signal becomes unstable. A poor connection or oxidized sensor terminals produce the same effect.
✅ Fix
In most cases, cleaning or replacing the fuel level sensor, along with checking the connectors and grounding, resolves the issue.
⚙️ 4. CVT system – jerky take-off at low speed (0–10 km/h)
On older-generation CFMOTO ATVs, a noticeable bump or jerk often appears when pulling away slowly, specifically only in the 0–10 km/h range.
A concrete example from our shop: a CFMOTO 1000 came in with only 300 km on the clock, and the cause turned out to be a belt that hadn't been properly broken in yet. A new belt has a slightly different surface than after the first hundred kilometers, so during that period it can grip unevenly inside the clutches, which is felt as jerking during slow take-off.
Most common symptoms:
- a bump or jerk on take-off, only at low speed
- the ride is otherwise normal at higher speeds
- on newer vehicles, the issue often settles on its own after a few hundred kilometers
✅ Fix
On newer vehicles (up to roughly 500 km), it's best to let the belt break in first – in many cases the issue improves on its own. If the jerking doesn't go away after that, it's worth checking belt wear and the condition of the primary clutch rollers (see also our guide on how the CVT system works and when to replace the belt).
🔥 5. High temperature near the CVT housing – this is not a fault
A fair number of CFMOTO owners contact us worried about a hot CVT cover, but this is actually completely normal on practically all ATVs.
The clutches and belt spin at up to 5000 RPM, separated from the rider's leg by only a few centimeters of casing. On a hot, sunny day the CVT cover can get hot enough to burn you if you touch it.
✅ When it's not normal
Heat on its own isn't cause for concern. But if a burning smell or a loss of power appears alongside the heat, the belt is most likely slipping – in that case, check the belt and clutches as described in the previous point.
⚙️ 6. Shifting issues – worn belt and clutches
We've also seen shifting issues on CFMOTO models, although noticeably less pronounced than on older Segway models. The cause is the same – a worn belt or worn rollers/sliders in the primary clutch.
Most common symptoms:
- stiffer or less smooth shifting between H and R
- a slight bump when shifting gears
- the ATV feels more tense than usual
✅ Fix
Inspect and, if needed, replace the belt and the primary clutch rollers. You'll find suitable CVT belts for ATVs in our range.
🖥️ 7. Display suddenly goes completely dark
In rare cases, we've seen CFMOTO displays suddenly go completely dark – this isn't a glitch in the RPM or fuel readout, it's the entire screen turning off and not coming back on.
🔧 What to check before replacing it
Before replacing the display, always check the fuses, connectors, and ground on the display side – a poor connection can cause the exact same symptom as an actual display failure.
✅ Fix
If the fuses, power supply, and connectors all check out and the display still won't turn on, replacing the display unit is the only fix.
🛞 8. Squeaky brakes on CFMOTO 450, 520, 625, and 1000
We've noticed brake squeal on newer CFMOTO models as well (450, 520, 625, 1000), especially in the last few km/h before coming to a full stop.
🔧 Why it happens
We suspect the cause lies in the brake pad material – a harder compound lasts longer but tends to squeak more. On several vehicles, we've also seen pads that were still in good condition while the brake discs were already visibly worn due to the harder pad compound.
Most common symptoms:
- squealing mainly during slow braking
- pads look fine, yet braking is loud
- visible uneven wear marks on the brake disc
✅ Fix
When replacing pads, we recommend always checking the brake disc as well – if it's worn, it's best to replace both together so the squeaking doesn't come back.
🏁 Conclusion
Xway is not an official CFMOTO service center, so our insight into CFMOTO ATVs is, for now, not as extensive as with TGB or Segway vehicles. The list above is based on real cases from our shop – we recommend checking each issue yourself before replacing parts, or consulting an official CFMOTO service center where needed.
